While I was travellng in Egypt in April, I was woken up early this morning by the sound of the firecrackers. I rushed outside to see the whole village in their best attire celebrating Eid. Eid commemorates the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It is celebrated by a large, community-wide prayer service in the morning. Families then gather for festivities, visiting relatives and sharing large meals with traditional foods. I was invited to share a cup of tea and sweets in the houses of families from the village. I have rarely sensed such a sense of community and fraternity in one place.
